Sugar "Less" = Longer Life
I recently had a traumatic day at the dentist. Why can't the dentist use warm water to clean debris from the mouth??? I can feel the cold water, especially when I am not completely numb! That day, I needed a lot of anesthesia in order to numb the two areas in my mouth. I did not eat breakfast before going to my appointment. ("BAD IDEA") As soon as I got out of the chair, the room was spinning. I felt like I was going to faint. ("OMG!") The dentist placed me in a room where I could sit down. She quickly realized that my blood sugar had dropped from receiving the anesthesia. Consequently, I became sad and emotional. The dentist and her staff reassured me that I was going to be alright. So, she gave me a fruity yogurt parfait and a piece of candy to raise my blood sugar. The fruit parfait had 39 grams of sugar in it. I didn't bother eating the candy. Needless to say, my blood sugar rose quickly and I began to feel better. Now my symptoms were typical as Dr. Gabriel Cousens explains in the video. This whole experience peeked my interest about sugar and sweetners. My research found the following article written by Sheryl Walters, a kinesiologist, nutritionist and holistic practitioner:
The typical effects of sugar are taught to us as children. Sugar can cause tooth decay by being used as a food source for the bacteria found on our teeth which causes plaque. In fact, the bacteria can actually turn the sugar into a glue which makes it harder to be washed away by saliva. Sugar also causes hyperactivity, crankiness, and difficulty concentrating in children as any parent can attest to! In addition to these well-known effects, sugar can also contribute to a decrease in immune function, increased cholesterol, overgrowth of yeast gastrointestinal problems, premature aging, cardiovascular disease, and more. There are many detrimental health effects of sugar but fortunately there are some healthier alternatives.
("The information is very useful and it works")
Bad Sugar Replacements! Sugar is often replaced in foods by products that are either lower in calories or cheaper to produce including aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal), sucralose (Splenda), and high fructose corn syrup. These products also have detrimental side effects. ("Difficult for the liver to process"). Replacing sugar as well as these sugar alternatives with natural sweeteners will have a beneficial effect on health.
Good Sugar Replacements! Agave nectar is one alternative that is used by health conscious consumers. Agave nectar comes from the same plant that tequila is made from. It has recently become recognized as a healthy alternative to sugar and artificial sugar substitutes. It is about 90% fructose but is completely natural unlike the processed fructose found in high fructose corn syrup. Another benefit of agave is that it has a low glycemic value (less than 30, compared to sugar which is in the 60's.) A food that is low on the glycemic index is less likely to be converted to fat. Agave nectar is more calorie dense than sugar but because it is about forty times sweeter much less can be used to achieve the same level of sweetness.
Stevia "This is what I use - Luv it" is another natural alternative to sugar and sugar substitutes. It is an herb native to Paraguay that has been used for centuries as a sweetener. It contains no calories and no carbohydrates. In 2008 the FDA approved its use as a food additive, previously it was sold only as a dietary supplement. Stevia also does not raise blood sugar so is a good choice for diabetics.
Replacement of sugar in your diet can be difficult. Reducing intake of processed foods and replacing sugar with natural sweeteners will increase your well-being, health, and energy.
There is another natural sweetner that I found in my favorite book that is not mentioned in the article above. Now, you won’t find the word sugar in the Bible but you will find-HONEY!
Proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
Proverbs 25:27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.
Psalms 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
In the previous passages of scripture the Bible uses honey to metaphorically address man's psychological, physical, and spiritual being. It stresses the importance of using "pleasant words" because it is good for the body physically and spiritually. It tells the reader to use honey in moderation and warns against searching for your own glory. Lastly, God's words are sweeter than honey to the mouth. ("Awesome!")

Well know that i know about sugar i need to cut it down specially if i want to get a diet to start eating healthy. This information comes good to me at this moment.
I really like this post because its great info! I mean I was a huge diet soda fan, until I learned that its better to just have a normal soda instead. Here I was thinking i was doing myself a favor. Thanks Dr.D good to know this info.
Once again i love the bible phrases "pleasant words"indeed they are only good for physical feelings.
"Lastly, God's words are sweeter than honey to the mouth."
Amen..
I had to show it to my mom.
wow ! this post has a lot of good information,I would though that the average human eats 90 to 180 pounds a sugar a year that is terrible , I have always been a tea guy but i have to try now the stevia plant!
This is very informative I like going to the dentist but then I don't becausae I do not like to hear that there is something wrong with my teeth. I have been trying to cut out all the sugars that I eat because they hurt my teeth and the pain kills me. But yet I never learn to cut them sweets out and I still eat them. I have though cut out sodas which is good, but thanks for this I will think twice now.

I've used stevia sweetner at my previous job before and I've gotten comments that it causes cancer. I've never looked into it.
90-180 pounds of sugar .. that's so much!

I have never really watched what I eat and seeing most of my friends on diets and eating healthy made me wonder if I should also be doing the same. Watching this made me realize how much sugar I consume in one day as well with my children. I am addicted to the soda, Coke in particular. I drink about 2 + cans a day. I will most definitely watch what I eat a little more now. I notice that I do get those emotions when I don't get them and just made me realize it after what was said on the video.
your recipies looks jummy

Reading this blog opens my eyes that I have not made the great decisions to sugar. I enjoy eating sweet things , besides I have low pressure so once I eat something sweet I feel much better. For now I will change the sugar I use at home.
As for the sugar I try my best to stay away from it because it brings me up and then really down.
Hope we meet again :)

Ms. Wooten thank you for sharing this article, what I loved about this article is that it explains the pros and cons of sugar. this is an important topic for my family and I because my parents suffer from diabetes and we need to turn our focus on eating healthy. since I am very addicted to caffeine, coke has me hooked and I know that this will affect me in the future. I have learned have food has a link to our feelings and actions
Stevia, Agave and Proverbs for me and of course Psalms the DMV Handbook and the California Penal Code. Bye
i have learned that there are many great sugar alternatives out there
instead of using sugar to sweeten things i use stevia extract, its a plant based natural sweetener, also for foods and mainly smoothies i uses blue agave syrup or natural honey! also if you take a good look at food labels make sure there is no high fructose corn syrup in it, that is used as sugar in many of today's foods, and literally it is toxic to the human body!!!

Now that I'm more health conscious I try to limit myself but I still cant cut sugar out completely. I've even tried stevia, I just don't like the way it tastes. My father is a diabetic and took a cooking class at Kaiser. In a healthy diet you shouldn't consume more than two small triangle pieces of watermelon. You can have only half a peach. The most fruit you can have is general are berries, your allowed only one cup. These restrictions seem crazy!
I'm hoping that all me other healthy choices will help finesse my sugar addiction.
I can also testify the link between sugar and emotions. The moment I start to get hungry or crave sugar I turn into a sugar monster. I get very irritable and cranky. Hence me keeping sweets in the house. I wonder if there is such a thing as sweet tooth's anonymous??
Seems that everything is bad these days. Thanks for helping us out. :)

Hello Ms. Wooten
Thank for the article about Sugar. The recent days I have problem with cholesterol and triglyceride, so I have to reduce table sugar and only use sugar replacement that is Splenda. According to DrD, Splenda is the bad alternative and the good substitutes are Agave nectar, and Stevia. I will look for it for my diet.
Thank

The statistic of consumimg sugar in the United States shows that the average American eats between 90 to 180 lbs of sugar each year. This number is biggest excess of sugar need for a person that causes many health problems for people. Through this article, I think we have to pay attention how to reduce sugar consuming every day and to look for alternatively sweet substances

I actually had not realized the true detrimental effects sugar had on my health, and I've recently been looking for ways to improve my diet. Knowing those better alternatives is helping me correct my family's health, as one of my parents has been diagnosed with diabetes since several years ago. Furthermore, your story about the dentist shed some light on specific issues I wasn't fully aware of as a child, and I'll be sure to take of my dental health as well.

Alright that's pretty wild the avg american consume 90-180 pound of surgar a year wow. I bet I consume way more now thinking about it.
I truly believe that sugar is not a good supplement for a diet. I use natural sweetness such as fruits, or raw honey.
your recipies looks yummy

Glucose is the common energy source for our bodies since they are the simplest unit of energy to break, but the fancy named sugars we read a lot are the larger versions of glucose. You can imagine a person trying to chop wood. It's easier to break twigs than to break a tree trunk. The energy needed to cut those sugars take a lot of work (and even more for the artificial ones since our bodies are not evolutionarily adapted to break them down).
I am not completely sugar free, but after switching apple juice for tea or water, I definitely feel a change in energy. It's small, but the extra bit of energy that I get helps to push me to the end of the day. I intend to go sugar-free at some point, but I know cutting sugar completely isn't an answer either. Everything in moderation as the saying goes.

Reading this really opened my eyes in a whole other way ! I’ve always known I needed to cut sugar but only people my doctors said it, but because of how I’d feel after eating it or the reason I would be eating the sugar ! thank you for your knowledge and helping open my eyes in a whole new light !

The information provided is quite useful for everyone! It's interesting as I've recently just learned about the use of agave as sugar replacement thanks to my nearby Acai yogurt place. Now I'm glad to know it has a low glycemic index which is less chance to become fat. It's also great to know that it's sweeter than sugar due to its density. I will note that NutraSweet, Equal, Splenda as sugar replacements are not good for you. I'll be sure to tell my mom know that.
Thanks

I really like this post because its great info! Eating less sugar isn't as easy as just avoiding sweet foods but as we all know that consuming too much sugar is unhealthy. It increases our risk of developing metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes, and can shorten our life expectancy by several years.

It can also lead to sugar addition because of its mood enhancing qualities – sugar prompts our brains to release serotonin and dopamine (our ‘happy’ hormones), so the instant lift we get is one of the reasons why many of us continually seek out foods that produce these feel-good emotions again and again.
Focusing on a healthy diet and giving up sugar entirely can go a long way towards increasing your energy levels, improving your memory and allowing you to concentrate more clearly.

It is sad to realize how much sugar is in everything we eat or drink, for example a simple Starbucks drink can have over 48 grams of sugar for a grande drink. If you do the math, that is over 11 teaspoons of sugar in one drink!! Sugar really does more harm to the body than good.

I really felt the urge to comment on this post because I saw SUGAR, Sugar is my number one enemy, as I know how it can deteriorate our health. I make sure to let my surrounding people know to avoid sugar as much as possible unless it is natural form of sugar which comes from fruits, though I think even natural sugar should be consumed with portion control. It is so harmful in countless ways, Starting from your teeth to your internal organs to your entire metabolism. The fact that sugar is hidden in so many ingredient in large amount makes me very upset as people are consuming over what they are suppose to which leads to serious diseases...Years ago I completely quit all sodas and juices, the only juices we drink in my house are the ones I makes myself with natural fruits...
when it comes to my children, it ca be difficult to drastically cut all sugar as they love to consume it, so I always try to put limits to it. I changed candies for vitamins gummy bears which works amazingly.
B.Arguello
Unhealthy types of sugar can make us sick and develop certain diseases like diabetes. but limitation of intake is necessary for our body to function properly. Triglycerides, an undesirable blood fat that raises the risk for heart disease and stroke, are also increased by sugar. A less favourable lifestyle in general was linked to higher sugar consumption. Even while it may be difficult to refrain from ordering an ice cold coke with your burger or refrain from grazing your fingers in the candy bowl at gatherings, cutting out sugar from your diet can have a substantial positive impact on your health. If you frequently indulge yourself to dessert and a cup of tea after dinner or pack a granola bar from the shop with your lunch every day.
