Breast Cancer In Men
I read an article in the October issue of JET magazine entitled "A Man's Journey". It was a short story but had a powerful testimony of a 33 year-old African-American man whose life was completely turned around when his fiancee noticed that his breast nipple was deformed. She insisted that he go to the doctor!(Remember my previous blog)
The young man's life catapulted into mammograms, an ultrasound, and two referrals to surgeons within two days of the diagnosis of having breast cancer. His advice to men is, when you get your annual prostate exam, include a breast check. Well, rather than tell you the whole story, you can read it. But, because this young man responded immediately, he is alive to share his story with others. I was inspired to give you a snippet. (LoL!)
Notice that men who have survived breast cancer have the pink and blue ribbon of which I have displayed. In my research I discovered there are a few male celebrities that have battled breast cancer. They are:
Richard Rountree
Shaft star is proof that breast cancer affects men, too. Rountree was diagnosed in 1993, had a radical mastectomy and rounds of chemotherapy.
Ernest Green
Famous American football player. He was diagnosed with the breast cancer in 2005 and he underwent mastectomy to cure it. Alongside 8 chemotherapy sessions this procedure managed to save his life.
What are the key statistics about breast cancer in men?

What are the key statistics about breast cancer in men?
The most recent American Cancer Society estimates for male breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:
· About 2,140 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men
· About 450 men will die from breast cancer
Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years.
The prognosis (outlook) for men with breast cancer was once thought to be worse than that for women, but recent studies have not found this to be true. In fact, men and women with the same stage of breast cancer have a fairly similar outlook for survival. Last Medical Review: 09/30/2011
